Funding options

We understand that seeking home care funding, whether for yourself or for a family member, can often add to your worries at an already difficult time. That’s why we aim to make it as simple as possible to understand the options available to you, helping you find a solution that is right for you and your family.

There are a variety of funding options you may be eligible for:

Type of funding Details
Local Authority Funded Home Care

Home care funding can sometimes be provided by your local authority. Simply contact the Adult Social Services department who will be able to assess whether ‘means tested’ funding for social care is a viable option. This type of funding is subject to your financial circumstances.

Even if you think that you may not qualify, it is always worth going down this route first as there are a number of other allowances which you may still be entitled to.

Social Care Payment Benefit This benefit is solely dependent on age and ability to perform basic living tasks. It is not associated with how much money, assets, or pension you have.
Disability and Long-term Sickness Payments Personal Independence Payment (PIP) (which has replaced the previous Disability Living Allowance (DLA)) is often granted to those with a disability or with a long-term health condition. It is typically available to those between the ages of 16 to 64.
Financial Assistance for Older Adults If you’re physically or mentally disabled and aged over 64, you may be eligible to receive Attendance Allowance (AA) which provides extra help with personal care needs.
Carer’s Allowance This is available to anyone who is caring for someone with substantial care needs. You need to be spending at least 35 hours a week caring for someone, but you do not necessarily need to be related to them or living with them to qualify.
Paying for Care Privately This can be a solution if you don’t qualify for standard social care funding. It would also be an option to consider if you wish to ‘top up’ care provision with private payments, perhaps in addition to support that is already received.

If you’re unsure of what you are eligible for, you can seek impartial advice from the www.payingforcare.co.uk website. It provides further information and advice on all aspects of care funding, including local authority assessments and care entitlements
